Let's get straight to it. The idea of going on holiday alone can feel daunting, especially if you've never done it before. You might be picturing yourself sitting alone at dinner, or standing awkwardly at the edge of a dance floor watching everyone else have fun. We completely understand that worry. And we're here to tell you it doesn't work like that. Not even close.
You Won't Be the Only One
On a typical Club Free Spirit dance holiday, around 73% of guests arrive on their own. That's not a typo. The vast majority of our guests are solo travellers. Which means from the moment you arrive, you're surrounded by people who've done exactly the same thing you have. Everyone is in the same boat, and that shared experience creates an instant connection.
We also run a Welcome Circle on the first evening of every holiday. It's a relaxed, informal gathering designed to break the ice and help everyone feel at home. By the time dinner rolls around, you'll already know several people by name.
What About the Gender Balance?
This is one of the most common questions we get, and it's a fair one. On dance holidays specifically, you need a reasonable balance so that everyone has someone to dance with. We actively manage this. We monitor the male-to-female ratio on every trip and adjust as needed. While we can't guarantee a perfect 50/50 split, we work hard to keep things balanced, and our partner rotation system means you'll dance with plenty of different people regardless.
Making Friends Is Built Into the Experience
This isn't a holiday where you have to go out of your way to meet people. The entire structure is designed to bring guests together naturally. Dance classes rotate partners every few minutes. Group meals are arranged so you're sitting with different people each time. Excursions and social evenings create shared experiences that give you something to talk about.
We've watched thousands of friendships form on our holidays over the past twenty years. People who arrived not knowing a soul have gone on to become lifelong friends, travel companions, and in quite a few cases, partners. It happens more often than you'd think.
Room Sharing: Your Options
Budget is often a concern for solo travellers, especially when hotels charge single supplements that can add hundreds to the cost. Here's how we handle it:
- Room share: We can pair you with another solo guest of the same gender. It's a great way to save money and you'll often end up sharing with someone who becomes a good friend.
- Single room: If you prefer your own space, you can book a single room. There is a supplement, but we keep it as reasonable as we can.
- No pressure either way: We'll never force a room share on you. It's entirely your choice.
But What If I'm Shy?
Good news: so is almost everyone else on their first trip. Our guests aren't all confident extroverts who bound into a room and start chatting. Many of them are naturally quiet, a bit reserved, or simply out of practice at socialising. That's perfectly fine. The dance classes do the heavy lifting for you. You don't need to walk up to a stranger and start a conversation. You just follow the class, rotate partners, and before you know it, you've spoken to a dozen people without even trying.
Our holiday hosts and instructors are also trained to spot anyone who might be feeling a bit lost and gently bring them into the group. No one gets left on the sidelines.
What Our Solo Guests Say
The single most common piece of feedback we receive from solo travellers is this: "I wish I'd done it years ago." Almost without exception, people tell us that going alone was the best decision they made. Not in spite of being on their own, but because of it. When you travel solo, you're more open to new experiences, more approachable, and more likely to form genuine connections.
Take the First Step
If you've been going back and forth about booking, here's our advice: just do it. Pick a trip that appeals to you, book it, and trust the process. We've been looking after solo travellers for over twenty years, and we know how to make sure you have a wonderful time. The hardest part is clicking "book." Everything after that, we'll take care of.
